Larry and Karen Royal

Earthworm Soil Factory of Butte Valley uses red earthworms to create exceptionally rich, organic and nutrient soil. Owners Larry and Karen Royal saw another opportunity for their 42 acres land. The company started its operations in an area where poor soil conditions prevented conventional farming. Therefore, the owners began the breeding of earthworms as well as using earthworms to process organic debris into worm castings.

Nature still makes the best compost, especially with a little help from a few million earthworms. After only a few years in business, the Vermicomposting operation was able to expand to an additional location. The company was offered a low-interest loan from The RMDZ program. This helped the Royals fund the purchase of necessary supplies, including a tub grinder, bins for harvesting and feedstock, irrigation and controls, lighting and protective netting, and, of course, red worms. The company also enjoys free advertising for their products by the RMDZ program on its website RecycleStore.com.

Earthworm Soil Factory has become a profitable way to divert organic materials from close by landfill sites. The company receives feedstock from schools, CSU Chico, collected yard waste and agricultural waste. The final product is then sold to households, nurseries, organic farmers for agricultural applications, and to landscape companies.
